Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on manual based therapy with its origins in Osteopathy. However it has developed into its own distinct therapy due to its simple effectiveness and potential. It is based in science, the application of which is the Art of Craniosacral therapy.

Craniosacral Therapy provides:

  • Evaluation of the Whole Body and its Systems

  • Release of Restrictions and tensions in the body

  • Facilitation of Homeostasis (body’s innate tendency to seek and maintain itself in balance or equilibrium)

  • Maximization of energy efficiency

  • CST is led by the client’s innate body wisdom

Craniosacral Therapy requires the Therapist to:

  • Listen with all of our senses

  • Palpate with a much lighter touch than is usual with physio, but is much more profound

  • Maintain an Awareness of Trauma, its effects and the Importance of being heard

  • Follow the body and its inherent wisdom, following the unwinding of the fascia

The Craniosacral system consists of Skull, Sacrum (tailbone) and Spinal Vertebrae which contain:

  • Fascial membranes surrounding spinal cord and brain

  • Fluid Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

  • Nervous Systems

  • Central Nervous System (CNS) controls muscles and glands

  • Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls our state of being whether stressed or relaxed

  • Sympathetic – Flight/Fight/Freeze (Overwhelm)

  • Stress hormones and adrenaline release

  • Parasympathetic – Rest & Digest

  • Body heals when in parasympathetic mode, safe mode

Effects of Trauma can be physical/ emotional/ viral/ chemical/ electrical/ neural… causing:

  • Fascia to tense/tighten

  • Strain patterns/Holding/Movement patterns

  • Neural pattern alterations

  • Emotions, which are molecules, to be held onto, adding to the tension

  • Increases in Tone – neural/fascial/muscular

  • SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System – Fight or Flight)

  • PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System- Rest and Digest)

How does it differ from Physiotherapy?

  • People generally find it very relaxing

  • During the session the client is lying on the bed, very little movement if any takes place

  • Clients remain fully clothed during a session

  • Sometimes there is dialogue during a session, other times there is quiet as the body gently unwinds

  • The effects may not manifest for a couple of days as the body continues to process the treatment
